When the trigger is pulled, the AR-15 bolt carrier group (abbreviated "BCG") initiates a sequence of events that results in semiautomatic fire. Permitting the bullet in the chamber to be fired by the impact of the firing pin on the primer.
The most important tasks of the AR-15 rifle or pistol are done by the bolt carrier group, which uses the expanding gas from the projectile to power its operations. A gas tube leads from the barrel's gas port to the BCG's gas/carrier key. Using this key, the BCG's body is pressurized with high-velocity gas. This causes the BCG to release and drive back into the buffer tube, where it compresses the buffer and the buffer spring. The BCG is hurled back into the upper receiver as the buffer spring rapidly expands after being compressed. This results in the discharged shell casing being ejected and a new round is chambered. All of this happens in under a second, making it much faster than a bolt-action rifle.
