The .300 AAC was designed to achieve the energy of Mikhail's 7.62x39 Soviet-style AK-47 while using standard AR-15 magazines at full capacity. The taper of the Soviet AK-47 7.62x39 cartridges prevented reliable feeding of the AR-15 magazine and caused bolt wear. The 5.56 round from the AR-15's 14 .5-inch barrel has an effective point of 500 yards. .300 blackout has a significant drop with a slight drift and energy loss between that distance. Out of a 16-inch barrel, the 125gr .300 Black Out has a lower velocity and similar bullet drop and drift at shorter ranges.

However, it has as much energy at 700 yards as 5.56 at 500 yards. With hit probability, the Blackout has an effective range of 450 yards. from a 9-inch barrel, and the same muzzle energy as the 5.56 from an AR-15, and 5 percent more energy at 440 yards. In comparison with AK-47 Mikhail 7.62×39mm rounds. the .300 BLK with different loads has better ballistics and more energy from barrels of the same length.
